Your vehicle manufacturer recommends a logbook service for many reasons. It is in the best interests of each company to ensure that these cars are reliable and, crucially, have a reputation for being so. To chase this goal, they put a great deal of effort into engineering design, as they balance longevity with reliability. They want to ensure that each major mechanical component will last as long as possible with little risk of failure but understand that certain parts need to be serviced along the way.

So, these companies do not schedule these visits simply to annoy each owner but to ensure that said owner can enjoy uninterrupted motoring instead. Clearly, if an owner does not comply with these service requests, there is a risk of failure. But further, this type of behaviour does not look good in the eyes of a potential buyer. Would you purchase a used car without a full logbook service history or question the vehicle instead? You may be worried that it could break down shortly after you buy, simply because it has not been maintained as recommended by the manufacturer.

Even if you can find a buyer, they may want to knock the price down to take into account the lack of service history. So, by missing service visits, you not only risk breakdowns and recalcitrant buyers but may also have less money in your pocket.
